Swell Magazine

These are a selection of images taken from the magazine I created. It was a self initiated brief to create a publication. Swell magazine is a women’s lifestyle magazine rooted in surfing. The content is primarily about surfing but also includes fashion, music, travel and art. The magazine encourages people to explore their own adventures and personal style and to be creative. It aims to inspire and excite people. The imagery used is all my original photography which included surf photography, fashion and product photography. Check out my website for some more photos.

One small step

ISTD 2010

Brief set by the International society of typographic designers

Project  02- 100

Create a typographic piece that represents the significance of the number 100. I decided to base my project on the 100- metre sprint. The winner of the race is given the title of ‘The fastest person on earth’ this is the epitome of human achievement.         Since the events debut in the Olympics the 100 metre sprint has been the target for athletes from all the parts of the world.

The  poster documents the 3 phases of the 100 metre sprint

1. Scientific  2.Physical and 3. emotional

The back of the poster-Imagery of Usain Bolt-The Fastest Man in the world (9.58 seconds)

It is A1 in size and is folded down into its packaging.

The pack was made from 300gsm card .

Both the poster and packaging were printed digitally.

Swell Magazine

For My last Uni project I decided to something I am really interested and passionate   design and photography. I have decided to make a magazine, based around the lifestyle of surfing and all the things that this lifestyle influences, fashion, music ,language and art. I went on a photoshoot yesterday for some of the fashion spreads I took sooo many photos so I have go through the slow process of editing and processing. Heres a sneak pick, My lovely friend Emily is the model and it was taken at Helans Bay, just outside Belfast.

FLATLAND

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott.

BRIEF: Design a ‘collectable’ publication. Your only production parameter is the use of a single A0 sheet and some method of packaging/mailing.

Target audience; I chose my target audience to be  Secondary school students studying English.

Strategy ; I  Focused on Flatlands references to Edwardian culture and the its customs regarding class. I created 3 double sided posters and a slip case to hold them. The posters can be uses as a learning aid in the classroom and to make the customs and literature of Edwardian culture easier to understand.

The Circle-The highest social class in flatland

Back Of the Poster-Extract taken from Flatland illustrating

the social classes in Flatland/Edwardian Britain.

Women are represented by lines in Flatland, Similarly to Edwardian Culture, Women were to be seen

and not heard-This is represnted by the speech marks.

Iregular features are scorned in flatland, shapes that  do not have straight lines and perfect angles

are of the lowest class in flatland. Again this references people who have disabilities or were somewhat                                               different where scorned in Edwardian Britain.
